My Fashion Influences

Image
This is going to be my final post for this blog! I very much enjoyed speaking with you about the topics I had written about previously. This week I wanted to write an appreciation post about some of my favorite people who have influenced me in some of the things I wear. The first type of style I wanted to talk about is Tyler The Creator’s style. Known for having cropped pants, colorful designs on his shirts, or his nails, platform loafers, and the unique hats and trunks he incorporates. Tyler has been a big inspiration to me because he wears what he wants, and he doesn’t care what other people wear. His style is unique and has influenced many other people to wear certain things that they may not have worn before. Another big influence for me is Lil Yachty. His style in my opinion is oversized clothes, sometimes vintage preppy look with Ralph Lauren Or Tommy Hilfiger. He mixes different types of shoes like boots, sneakers, designer trainers. His style is very broad due to his exte

Mary Quant's Influence on the Fashion Industry

Image
Mary Quant was known for her many fashion revolutionary looks in the 1960’s. She is known for her short skirts, tights, a jersey dress and even trousers. She set a path for women to be able to wear more than just long droopy skirts. What I would like to talk about is the revolutionary design for trousers. Trousers were seen as a masculine garment in many cultures. There were even rules for women to not be able to cross dress. Mary Quant opened a store in 1955 that featured trouser, female students and females of the outskirts of fashion were some of the people who were buying them. Although most women wore them in private, Mary Quant was determined to test the already made gender established norms by creating trousers to be worn for almost anything. Trousers were an easy alternative for women who didn’t want to wear shorter skirts. Some of the trousers she made then still have an impact on the fashion industry today. Bell bottoms, wide legged pants, flared trousers, and even pant

Post Consumerism Waste Materials

Image
If you don’t already know what Post Consumerism waste materials are I will give you a brief explanation. Post consumerism waste materials is any type of garment that the consumer may not want anymore because of it being worn out, it being damaged, or it going out of fashion. Then that product that is unwanted would get recycled and get used for a different item. A brand that is known for using recycled materials is a spanish brand named Ecolaf. The brand's intention was to create a sustainable brand as a result of not having a large market for 100% recycled materials. An example of a product that is made from recycled materials would be their Aneto jacket. It is made out of recycled polyester from used plastic bottles, and Sorona which is a biopolymer that is made from corn production residue. Another product is their Bas Bucket Hat. The product is made from 100% organic cotton which is grown without the pesticides and all the negative things that could impact our environment. I

Insulting vs Inclusive

Image
Hello, it is Quincy again. Today I wanted to talk about brand names that are known as offensive or insulting and brand names that are inclusive. Brand names are very important, and when you are choosing your brand name you should account for other people because you never want to offend anybody. The brand I am going to be talking about is a vegan blog that produces vegan cookbooks called “Thug kitchen”. You may be asking, “how is thug kitchen offensive?” The word thug has been basically assigned to black people over the years. It dehumanizes somebody, and being called anything based on your skin color doesn’t make anybody feel good. The blog started in 2012, which shared content written in AAVE ( African-American Vernacular English) and often included rap lyrics by popular black artists. In 2014 the blog released their first cookbook which led to the world finding out the owners of the blog. Being both white, the brand got a lot of backlash for appropriating black culture, and digit

Ageism

Image
Ageism is an overlooked way of being prejudiced. You look at somebody because of their age, and tell them off the rip that they are too young or too old for the job without giving them any sort of opportunity to showcase what exactly they can do. I am going to be talking about how ageism affects fashion, and how it can also impact somebody's mental health. In the industry of fashion, it is very important to fit the right age group. You never want to be too young because you may not know as much as somebody that has 5 more years of experience. Does that mean they know more than you or they are better at their job than you? No, it’s just something that holds value in the fashion industry. Those beliefs that only a certain age or amount of experience required may miss out on something that could be beneficial to them. Mentally it affects somebody because they are being shut down as for any other reason but age which could cause somebody to be overly stressed and even depressed.

My First Store

Image
Hello everybody, it's Quincy again and I would like to proudly announce the beginning of a project I’ve been working on. I am opening my own clothing store. The name of my store is Fits. My store is located in the fashion district in New York. The mission of Fits is to make customers confident in themselves through clothing. The store connects to my blog through fashion and mental health. The store is set out to help build confidence within customers which could lead to a better mental health. You should expect to see a section for second hand clothing, vintage pieces, and some luxury street wear clothing. My store will look simple but a lot at the same time. It would be white walls with white ceiling and marble floor. The shelves would be white and the counters woould be a white bottom with a marble top. The store would look very modern with floor to ceiling windows in the front of the store with glass doors. As far as decorations go I would buy paintings from local artists a

Things I do to Improve my Mental Health through Fashion!

Image
Mental health is something that can be very tiring on somebody, or it can make you anxious to walk into a crowded room. It can make you second guess yourself to wear you lose confidence in your appearance. I’ve experienced many situations where my mental health caused me to lose confidence in myself to the point where I didn’t want to go out in public. Something that has helped me overcome my anxiety is dressing how I want to, to my standards. Growing up I was told “if you look good you play good” and I always thought it was just something all the older people told me before my games. I may not have applied it to the basketball court but I did apply it to my life and it has helped with my anxiety immensely. Wearing what I like and what I want allows me to be the most comfortable and confident in my own skin. The photo of me was from a week ago and I was low on confidence, but going outside and taking these pictures did boost my confidence because I liked the outfit and the pictures e

Cultural Appreciation vs Appropriation

Image
The differences between Cultural Appreciation and Cultural Appropriation are very clear. Cultural appreciation is when a brand or a designer has an interest in something other cultures do or designs they have. That designer or brand takes time to educate themselves about what they have an interest in and show it the correct way, by advertising it with the people of the culture and so forth. Cultural appropriation is when a brand or designer steals designs from another culture without educating themselves beforehand. Those brands and designers disrespect a culture and the people of that culture. A brand that shows cultural appreciation is a luxury skin care brand that is owned by Ozohu Adoh called Epara. The brand came about because she suffered from persistent follicular eczema, and she started looking at the ingredients her African forbears used. She planned on having it as a commercially sold product but now it’s being sold in luxury stores. My opinion on the brand is that the

Everybody has their favorite type of shopping. When it comes to saving money and getting good quality pieces, thrifting might be the choice for you. Thrifting has many ways of shopping, such as going to vintage stores, second hand shops, and of course thrift shops. Thrift shopping is time consuming, and you may not be successful at the store you visit, but the satisfaction you get from finding the perfect piece of clothing is one of the best feelings. When it comes to thrifting, in my opinion there is one thing should look into before going thrifting. The main thing for me is to do research of the location of the store and the reviews. If the store is in a popular area, the store could be more saturated and there won’t be as much of a selection for your size, or the quality of the products may not be good. An example of a thrift store I wouldn’t recommend going to is 2nd Ave Thrift Superstores in Hamilton, New Jersey. The reason I say this is because it is very saturated with you

About me

Image
My favorite thing to do is workout and shop. Working out and shopping are my getaway from reality. Being in the gym and feeling the gains helps me tremendously become more confident in myself but it also helps me become less anxious. My anxiety can get bad sometimes so if I feel it getting worse I may bring myself to go workout or go to the nearest thrift store and shop. Shopping online or at a thrift store are my go to’s for shopping. I tend to stay away from retail stores and or malls because I never truly find anything I like and online the sales and discounts are the best. I have a dog, her name is Hazel Grace from the “Fault In Our Stars”. She is a german shepard, and she is so well behaved. She barks non-stop though, that’s her only downfall. In the future I want to have my own clothing brand where I am able to give an outlook on how I see fashion and become a really big designer like Virgil. When I think of fashion, I don’t think of what brand the piece of clothing is or ho
